Library Director III – Roswell P. Flower Memorial Library

The work involves planning, directing, and administering library operations and budgets in accordance with policies determined by the Library Board of Trustees. The Library Director should exhibit working knowledge of 21st century public library trends, emerging technologies, have demonstrated leadership skills, and be able to provide evidence of forward thinking and successful implementation of new ideas. The successful candidate will be capable of developing strong relationships with staff, city leadership and departments, the North Country Library System, the Friends of Flower Library, and the Library Board of Trustees. Additionally, the Library Director is expected to represent the library and publicize its resources and services at community meetings and events.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Comprehensive knowledge of library administration practices; comprehensive knowledge of modern library organizations, procedures, policies, aims, and services; thorough knowledge of modern principles and practices of library science; ability to carry out library policies; ability to prepare the library budget and monitor expenditures; ability to train and supervise library staff; ability to exercise leadership and motivate others; ability to comprehend users’ needs quickly and accurately; ability to evaluate situations, meet people easily, and participate effectively in the cultural and intellectual activities of the community; ability to express ideas clearly and effectively both orally and in writing; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

Salary range: $68,425-$86,282 depending on experience. Information on benefits can be provided.

Minimum qualifications: An MLS from an ALA accredited school, eligible for certification by the New York State Education Department and six (6) years of professional experience in a library of recognized standing, two (2) or more which must have been in an administrative capacity. Experience in a public library preferred.

More about the library: Roswell P. Flower Memorial Library, Watertown, New York, located near Lake Ontario and the Thousand Islands region of the St. Lawrence River, is searching for a Library Director III. This administrative position directs a library chartered to serve the city population of 24,000. The Library is the central library for the North Country Library System and provides services and resources for a large part of Jefferson County. Housed in a beautiful, recently restored historic building, Flower Library serves as a regional cultural center for the Watertown area. The Library operates with a budget of $1.2 million and has an annual circulation of 70,000. Flower Library is a vibrant community center, open 55 hours per week, six days per week. This position supervises 11 FTE, including four professional librarians in a union environment. Currently children’s and teen programming has been thriving and adult programming is also growing. The Library has an active genealogy department run by volunteers and an accomplished Friends of the Library organization. The Library also houses one of 35 SUNY Attain Labs which provides free courses in technology skills for community members.

Director – Baudenhausen Reading Room

The Badenhausen Reading Room is currently accepting resumes and seeking highly qualified applicants for the position of Director. Reporting directly to the Board of Trustees, the Director is responsible for overseeing all aspects of Reading Room operations to efficiently and effectively serve the public needs. We are seeking a candidate with strong communication skills and progressively responsible library service. 20 hours a week with schedule to be determined.

Qualifications: Must have completed not less than two academic years of full time study in an approved college or university.

Salary and Benefits: *$17 an hour, 20 hours a week

About the library: Formally the Badenhausen Library, a branch of the Massena Public Library- the Badenhausen Reading Room was formed by a group of dedicated volunteers from Brasher, Stockholm and Lawrence. The library was originally formed thanks to an ongoing commitment from Dr. D. S. Badenhausen. The library, located in the former Boothe Hardware Store in downtown Brasher Falls, opened its doors on December 11th, 2014. The Badenhausen Reading Room, operating in the same location as the library, opened its doors on January 3rd, 2022. The Reading Room remains a part of the North Country Library System, which allows access to e-resources and materials from 65 libraries across the North Country. Part-time Library Aide — Fulton Public Library

The Fulton Public Library is seeking an energetic, flexible, part-time Library Aide to provide the highest level of customer service. The Library Aide will be responsible for conducting basic library materials processing and handling duties, customer service, opening and closing duties, and any other library tasks as assigned.

This is an 18 hour per week position but could include more hours if coverage is needed during the week. 

Schedule:

Monday: 9-5

Friday: 9-5

Saturday: 9-1

Compensation: Starting pay is $13.20 per hour

Duties/Description:

  • Provide customer service and reference assistance at the circulation desk
  • Provide customer service with public computers, fax machine, and copier
  • Perform other tasks in the library as needed.

Requirements:

  • Strong verbal communications skills and customer service orientation
  • High School diploma or GED

Skills and Strengths: 

  • Knowledge of computers and information technology helpful
  • Ability to multi-task and perform changing duties as needed
  • Attention to detail
  • Friendly and approachable manner

IT Support Specialist – North Country Library System

The North Country Library System (NCLS) is located along the Black River in Watertown, NY. Our mission is to support local libraries and the communities they serve to maximize sharing, creativity, and innovation and improve the lives of North Country residents at home, at work, at school and at play. We do that by providing shared resources and services to 65 member libraries across Oswego, Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence Counties. NCLS has an opening for an IT Support Specialist to provide support to our IT department.

The IT Support Specialist:

  • Provides physical and remote support for end user hardware and software
  • Configures, installs and deploys end user hardware and software
  • Diagnoses, repairs and replaces end user hardware and software as needed
  • Documents as needed all procedures, settings and inventory
  • Helps configure, install, diagnose and maintain LAN,s, WAN’s and network infrastructure equipment
  • Assists with training end library staff regarding the use of their end user device(s) and software through one-on-one consultations and group instruction
  • Complies with and helps to enforce company standards, policies and procedures
  • Works collaboratively with system staff to support digital projects
  • Helps manage online services software and mobile app technology
  • Occasionally travels to member libraries for consultations
  • Performs other duties in the IT department as needed

Required qualifications: Candidate should have strong knowledge of the use, operation and repair of computers, related peripheral equipment and networking equipment; working knowledge of computer applications; ability to follow oral and written instruction; ability to complete work as scheduled in a timely manner; and a willingness to work a non-standard work schedule. In addition to these characteristics, candidates should also have:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Great attention to detail and strong organizational skills
  • Strong Knowledge of Windows desktop operating systems, TCP/IP, and Ethernet networks.
  • Familiarity with mobile devices (tablets, e-readers, smartphones, etc.)
  • The ability to communicate complex technical material to users who possess varying levels of technical skills and abilities

Desired qualifications: 

  • Associates degree in an Information Technology field
  • 2 years work experience in the Information Technology field
  • Familiarity with public libraries and the services they provide to their communities.

Annual Salary and Benefits:

Salary is $36,000 – $40,000 based on experience plus generous benefits package that includes membership in the NYS Employee Retirement and supplemental insurance options.

More than $300,000 Awarded to Local Libraries for Construction Upgrades

Additional libraries in New York State received funding for their construction needs. Lauren Moore, Assistance Commissioner for Libraries and State Librarian, announced that the New York State Library in partnership with New York’s twenty-three (23) public library systems, has awarded $14 million in State Aid for Library Construction funds for 135 construction projects.
