Board Buzz 2/5/24

As a library trustee, it’s important for you to keep up with important library updates, but we want to make sure you get it in a format that’s quick to read and easy to digest. Let’s get to it!

Library Advocacy Day

Tomorrow, NCLS consultants will be heading to Albany to advocate for library funding in the NYS budget. Next year’s budget includes an increase in library aid – great news for North Country libraries! That being said, this isn’t the final adopted budget, and there’s still time to let legislators know that libraries need this increase. You can take action right now using NYLA’s pre-drafted letter to contact your representatives – it’s quick and easy!

Annual Reports

Library staff and trustees are working hard to make sure their NYS required Annual Reports are completed successfully by the deadline! Trustees should review and ensure they are providing accurate reporting and meeting the compliance requirements stated on the Annual Report. The board should plan to approve their library’s Annual Report at their February or March meetings. For more information, please check out the Annual Report Guide or ask your consultant for more details.

Ballot Planning

In February, many of you will be presenting your local school board with your proposition and petition for funding on your school ballot. Please remember to communicate with other libraries in your school district and also let NCLS know. Now is also a great time to kick off your advocacy for school ballot funding. You can find ballot marketing templates on the Funding page of the Trustee Guide. If you’d like help with campaign strategies, please reach out to your NCLS consultant.

Upcoming Trustee Trainings

We’ve got some good continuing education opportunities coming up – join us for an afternoon or evening session of the Trustee Zone on February 15 or get the lowdown on how to Be an Employer of Choice on March 7.

And that’s this month’s Board Buzz! If there’s someone on your board who’s not receiving NCLS emails, please have your library director complete a Trustee Contact Form so that we can make sure they’re getting the information they need.
