Library Assistant (Children’s Programming) – Carthage Free Library

Carthage Free Library is seeking an enthusiastic and energetic individual to fill the role of Library Assistant/Children’s Programmer, part time (up to 15 hours/week). We are seeking a friendly, energetic, and highly motivated individual to provide excellent customer service to our children and their parents.

Primary Responsibilities: Planning and executing programming for children (birth to middle school) which currently includes:

• a weekly Story Time (infant to 2nd grade)

• special story times for Head Start (monthly)

• special afternoon or evening programs for elementary and middle school children (monthly) • Winter and Spring Break programs for children (annually)

• Battle of the Books promotion and support (annually)

• Story Walks

• Supervisory/promotional help with the Summer Reading Program.

• Offsite programming (as needed)

• Curation and organization of circulation materials for the children’s room.

Primary Qualifications:

• Fluent in toddler and Pre-Teen and everything in between

• Must have NO fear of crafts, games, singing, dancing, and preparing simple snacks

• Experience working with children (birth – 6th grade)

This position will require partnership with the Director to promote programs via publicity releases, flyers, social media, and online calendar.

Will Receive Training on: checking items in and out, pulling holds, processing materials, registering patrons, collecting fines, shelving and shelf maintenance.

Library Assistant Qualifications, Desired Knowledge, Skills:

• Ability to relate tactfully and courteously with the public and to maintain effective working relationships with other employees.

• Excellent communication, customer service and organizational skills. • A degree of comfort with technology and social media.

• Ability to climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, and lift 25lbs or more. • Ability to perform with minimal supervision, establish and maintain priorities, meet deadlines, exercise initiative, and make independent decisions.

• Ability to balance multiple projects simultaneously.

• Ability to represent the library in a professional manner.

• Assist with general upkeep and light maintenance of the library.

• Performs other duties as assigned.

Educational Requirements: Graduation from high school or possession of GED

Hours: The standard part time workweek will be up to 15 hours, including some evenings and taking part in the Saturday rotation. Staff may work additional hours on occasion.

Salary and Benefits:
