You know what I love? Not being hot. I’ve been enjoying the cooler weather and thinking unapologetically about apple pie and the State Fair. And of course, checking the horizon for fall lists. Here’s one from Bustle, to kick off the turning of the season.
In the meantime, it’s a new month, and we’ve got new lists to prove it. We’ve got August picks from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Time, the LA Times, Town & Country, and The Millions. For all you genre fans, we’ve got romance from Book Riot, science fiction, fantasy and horror from Gizmodo, sci fi and fantasy from Lit Hub, and of course, crime reads from CrimeReads.
We’ve also got new Book Club Bags coming soon! The following titles will be available right after Labor Day:
Blacktop Wasteland, by S.A. Cosby
The Season: A Social History of the Debutante, by Kristen Richardson
Ordinary Grace by William Kent Krueger
For those of you who are new to the system, NCLS loans books exclusively for local book clubs to use for their discussions. Books are checked out in a sturdy canvas bag containing 12 paperback copies of each title and a printed list of discussion questions. Bags are checked out for six weeks, and they can be picked up and returned at any NCLS member library. You can browse our current titles here: ncls.org/bookclub
And remember, if you have a suggestion for a title to be added, please don’t hesitate to send it my way! (Three new books are added quarterly.)
Just a reminder that September is Library Card Signup Month! With our new browser-based ILS, you can simply grab your laptop or tablet and head to the outreach event of your choice. NCLS spent the summer signing people up for new cards and reactivating old ones and it was easy as pie. Highly recommend!
Finally, #FridayReads: I’m currently tag-teaming my fiction (Zorrie by Laird Hunt) and non-fiction (Will My Cat Eat My Eyeballs, by Caitlin Doughty) reads right now, depending on my mood. I also just got my hands on the latest Katherine Center and am looking forward to diving into that next week while I’m on vacation. Happy reading!
