RA for your Friday

We are right smack up against the gatepost of summer reading, and the lists are rolling in! Goodreads has launched their summer reading guide, and of course, we already talked about PW’s Summer Reads. On top of that, we’ve got beach reads from USA Today, Barnes and Noble, Southern Living, and Harper’s Bazaar.

But what IS a beach read? CNN weighs in, and provides a bit of historical context:

“A beach read doesn’t ask the reader to ponder the grim realities of the modern world or plunge into the depths of the human experience. Rather, it offers a break from the slog of daily life and the constant drumbeat of depressing news stories… Though now ingrained in our culture, the notion of summer reading was actually a 19th century invention of the publishing industry that sprung up in response to the creation of the summer vacation.”

Interested in creating your own list of recommended reads for summer? NCLS is compiling a page of library staff picks that go along with CSLP’s adventure theme. Build your showcase in Vega (making sure to include your community in list name), and we’ll add it to the NCLS Summer Picks page! Bonus: You can also embed it into your own website. (Not sure how to build a showcase? Here’s a handy how-to.)

The June Library Reads and Indie Next lists are out. Go ahead and print em out for yer corkboard.

In awards news, the Pulitzers have been announced and as I type this, every copy of the fiction winner in our catalog is checked out. (You know, in case you felt spendy today.)

In pop culture news, the first half of Bridgerton’s season three just dropped and it will be another MONTH before the second half airs. Get yer Regency readalikes out front and center to tide fans over!

Finally,#FridayReads: Slump, broken! Thanks to everyone who responded with suggestions. Now I’m raring to go, nightstand full to bursting with novels old and new – including Funny Story, which I will buzz through this weekend to make sure that I can send it to the next person in the holds queue. Happy reading!
