Youth Services Librarian – Onondaga Free Library (Syracuse)

We are looking to hire an energetic person to lead the youth services department of an active and vibrant public library. Prospective candidates should enjoy working with children and caregivers and deliver high quality customer service with tact, courtesy and professionalism to all users of the library.

Onondaga Free Library, incorporated in 1961, serves the residents of the Town of Onondaga and as a member library of the Onondaga County Public Library system, the residents of Onondaga County.
This modern, free association library is an award-winning branch located in a southwestern suburb of Syracuse.

The library was renovated and expanded in 2010 and has an average yearly circulation of over 220,000 items.

With an annual operating budget of approximately $1.2 million, the library has an active and dedicated Friends group.

Duties and Responsibilities:

· Selects materials for, maintains and promotes youth collection from newborn to 6th grade, and assists in other materials selections, shelving and cataloging.

· Creates and facilitates exhibits, speakers, activities, advertising, and programs for youth services patrons and their caregivers including outreach programs in cooperation with schools and other agencies.

· Attends programming meetings, attends and creates an agenda for youth services meetings, attends county youth services meetings as needed.

· Plans, with the director and assistant director, the overall scope of library activities, services, resources and policies.

· Provides reference and material advisory services.

· Serves as liaison to and from other agencies and groups serving youth and families.

· Communicates well with the director, library staff, patrons and volunteers.

· Maintains statistics of circulation, programming and more and submits reports on youth services programming monthly.

· Responsible for the entire youth area including displays, equipment, furniture, materials, social media advertising and the youth services portion of the website.

· Attends staff meetings, library board meetings if requested, professional meetings, workshops, and community activities.

· Keeps up-to-date on library issues, policies, procedures and technology.

· Carries out general public service duties when necessary and performs other duties as assigned by the director.

Qualifications and Requirements:

· Master’s Degree in Library Science from an accredited institution.

· Possession of or eligibility for a New York State Public Librarian’s Certificate.

· Minimum of two years of library experience in a youth services capacity is preferred.

· Day, evening and weekend hours are required.

· Excellent people and customer service skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.

· A passion for children’s literature and working with children and caregivers is essential.

· Knowledge and proficiency with computer technology is required. Must be adept at providing instruction and/or troubleshooting for patrons in relation to computer hardware, software, or portable devices, especially with library databases and applications.

· Experience with the POLARIS circulation system is beneficial.

Compensation and Benefits:

This is a full time position of 35 hours per week.

Salary commensurate with experience.
